The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the General Services Administration (GSA) have issued a request for information (RFI) to identify solar technologies that can be installed on government buildings as part of the GSA Proving Ground program.
These federal agencies are partnering to field-test promising next-generation technologies, including solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies, to improve building energy performance and maintain healthy, productive environments without compromising occupant comfort, even during power disruptions.
The agencies are seeking information about innovative, transformational solar technologies and solutions in the pre-commercial or early commercial stage of development.
Input received will enable DOE to connect technology providers with field-study host sites and identify DOE-funded third parties to verify performance. Performance of selected technologies will be evaluated under dynamic, real-world conditions in federally or privately owned commercial buildings, or both, in multiple climate zones.
PV technologies manufactured in the United States that incorporate one or more of these attributes are of particular interest:
- High-efficiency PV cell and module designs
- Improved PV construction materials, fabrication processes, or installation methods
- Building-integrated PV, such as PV windows and facades
- Innovative power systems supporting PV, including PV-plus-storage systems
The GSA Proving Ground program evaluates next-generation building technologies in real-world operational settings, recommending the most promising for deployment on federal properties. Discovering the most innovative technologies early in their development helps ensure GSA’s leadership position in the commercial building industry and contributes to GSA's sound investment decisions, which greatly benefit the American taxpayer.
