President Trump Releases FY 2021 Budget Request

President Donald J. Trump unveiled his FY 2021 Budget Request, including $35.4 billion to fund the Department of Energy (DOE). This year’s budget underscores the importance of nuclear security, DOE’s intradepartmental collaborations, crosscutting priorities, and continued investment in early-stage research and development at DOE National Labs. WORKSHOPS: Energy Storage Grand Challenge Announces Initial Series of Public Workshops

The Energy Department will hold a series of workshops to receive input on the approaches and activities for the Energy Storage Grand Challenge (ESGC) initiative. Workshops will be held in Seattle, Austin, Chicago and Washington D.C. in March 2020. On March 16, AMO will host a special workshop on manufacturing, which will be part of the two-day ESGC event in Chicago, to address energy storage challenges and opportunities for U.S. manufacturing.

DOE Awards $187 Million to Strengthen U.S. Manufacturing Competitiveness

DOE recently awarded $187 million for 55 projects in 25 states to support innovative advanced manufacturing research and development. These projects address high-impact manufacturing technology, materials, and process challenges that advance the Trump Administration’s goal to strengthen domestic manufacturing competitiveness and position the U.S. for global leadership in advanced manufacturing. COMING SOON: DOE to Release Funding Opportunity Announcement for Phase II Small Business Projects

In early March, DOE will release a Phase II funding opportunity announcement (FOA) for the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs. Phase II projects are expanded R&D efforts with awards of up to $1,100,000 over two years. Applicants must have received a Phase I or Phase II award to apply. DOE and American Chemistry Council Sign MOU to Collaborate on Innovative Plastics Recycling Technologies

Earlier this month, DOE and the American Chemistry Council (ACC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance innovation in energy efficient plastics recycling and reduce waste through enhanced recovery of post-use plastics. The MOU serves as a framework for DOE and ACC to collaborate on the development of innovative plastics recycling technologies and strengthen the domestic plastics supply chain. Learn more.


DOE Announces Water Security Prize to Stimulate Resource Recovery among Small and Medium-sized Facilities

DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) announced a $1 million Water Resource Recovery Prize to accelerate resource recovery from municipal wastewater across the United States. Through this two-phased competition, DOE is accepting proposals for novel, systems-based solutions to stimulate resource recovery at small-to-medium-sized water resource recovery facilities. This effort can help lower the cost of wastewater treatment. FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: DOE Announces Funding for Sustainable Transportation Research

DOE recently announced nearly $300 million in funding for research and development of sustainable transportation resources and technologies. Under this opportunity, AMO will provide funding support with the Vehicles Technology Office for materials technology development. AMO will also jointly fund projects with the Fuel Cells Technology Office in electrolyzer manufacturing and advanced carbon fiber for compressed gas storage tanks. Learn more here.
