Request for Information: Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Power Cycles Integrated with Thermal Energy Storage

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) has issued a request for information (RFI) to gather insights about the integration of advanced supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) and thermal energy storage with concentrating solar-thermal power (CSP). sCO2 power cycles have the potential to reduce the cost of CSP by converting high-temperature solar heat into electricity far more efficiently than conventional power cycles. The goal of this RFI is to assess how the commercialization of sCO2 integration with CSP can be accelerated. This information will help inform the office’s planning efforts.

The RFI covers four broad categories:

  • The programmatic and strategic aspects of sCO2 integration with CSP
  • Components and designs of sCO2 cycles
  • Thermal energy storage
  • Practical design considerations

Additional Information

Responses to this RFI must be submitted electronically to SETO.RFI.CSP@ee.doe.gov no later than 5:00 p.m. ET on December 18, 2019. Responses must be provided as attachments to an email. It is recommended that attachments with file sizes exceeding 25MB be compressed (i.e., zipped) to ensure message delivery. Responses must be provided as a Microsoft Word (.docx) attachment to the email, and no more than 20 pages in length, with 12-point font and 1-inch margins. Only electronic responses will be accepted.

Please identify answers by responding to a specific question or category, as applicable. Respondents may answer as many or as few questions as they deem appropriate.

Respondents are requested to provide the following information at the start of their response to the topic:

  • Company / institution name;
  • Company / institution contact;
  • Contact’s address, phone number, and e-mail address.

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy will not respond to individual submissions or publicly publish a compendium of responses. A response to this RFI will not be viewed as a binding commitment to develop or pursue a project or idea.
