Teachers never seem to take a day off. Even during the summer they can frequently be found in a classroom – but sometimes, they get to be the ones behind the desks. Our Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California offers six summer workshop topics for middle school, high school, and community college teachers to do just that, investing their out-of-school time into learning about the latest innovations and technologies at a top U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory.

These classes are all unique professional development experiences at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Why? Teachers will move from novice to mastery in hot scientific disciplines, know how to use their knowledge in the classroom on real-world examples, and earn continuing education and credential course credit through the California State University Chico Regional & Continuing Education Special Session Courses. Plus the training is aligned with Next Generation Science Standards.
For teachers interested in computer simulation, modeling, and real-world applications, register now for the five-day workshops in July, where you’ll learn the concepts behind these activities, interact with Laboratory scientists, and learn the free open-source NetLogo software. The computational modeling & simulation workshop is in late June and late July.
If you’re looking for professional development around learning science by doing science, expanding your lab skills, and getting hands-on laboratory activity experience in microbiology, biology, biochemistry, and molecular genetics, then register for the three or five day bioscience workshops in mid-June.
To learn 3D print and design with the skills you’ll need to implement 3D printing and Computer Aided Design into your classroom, sign up for our state-of-the-art 3D tech workshops in June. The workshops place an emphasis on teaching participants real world, classroom-applicable skills through hands-on exercises, group projects, and talks/tours of current LLNL 3D printing research. A three day workshop is offered as a stand-alone course (no advanced experience required), and a five-day follow up workshop is also available to dive deeper. These workshops are in mid-June.
Become an expert on spectroscopy and the properties of light used in fusion and solar science through the teacher’s Fusion/Astrophyics workshops. You’ll tour the National Ignition Facility and learn about the latest developments in fusion energy by lab scientists in the three-day workshop, and in the five-day workshop you can learn about stellar astrophysics, Special Relativity, and gravitation interspersed with classroom-tested hands-on labs and activities. Each day includes either a lab tour or a talk by a lab scientist. Sometimes both! Tours include the Gamma-ray Spectrometer lab, Center for Advanced Mass Spectroscopy, Electron Beam Ion Trap, and Jupiter Laser Facility. These workshops are in late June.
Last but not least, prepare to build your students’ technical writing skills toward Common Core Standard goals to improve lab instruction, technical literacy, lab notebooks, abstracts, and science posters. You’ll get activities and examples that embody the NGSS science/engineering communication practices, all in two days in mid-July.

AnneMarie Horowitz is the Chief of Staff for the Arctic Energy Office. She joined the Arctic Energy Office in May 2023. AnneMarie has been with the Energy Department since 2010, and was previously on the digital team of the Office of Public Affairs, where she managed digital projects and internal employee communications efforts. AnneMarie was the Digital Communications Manager from March 2023 - September 2023 for the Department of Health and Human Affairs' Public Education Campaign, We Can Do This, to share information about the COVID vaccine.
From 2015 - 2017 she served as the Special Advisor on workforce issues for Deputy Secretary of Energy Dr. Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall. She has also previously worked in the Under Secretary for Management and Performance and in the Office of Minority Economic Impact.
AnneMarie has a BA in Political Science from the University of Portland and a Masters of Government from Johns Hopkins University.
