Pole 178 and the H2A/H2B 13.8-kilovolt overhead line disconnect switch were installed in the early 1950s, and are located southwest of Building 292-H. Replacement of both pieces is proposed because the switch malfunctions each time it operates and the pole is bent which presents a safety hazard. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) are not an issue because there are no liquids/oils associated with the switch. A Radiological Buffer Area (RBA) will be established prior to start of proposed pole removal activities. Radiological Control Operations (RCO) will survey the pole as it is being removed from hole. After survey, RCO will remove the RBA and the new pole will be placed in the existing hole. The new switch will then be installed on the new pole. The old pole will be sent to the pole yard for eventual disposition to Three Rivers Landfill.
