September 7, 2017A large dissolved phase chlorinated solvent plume exists in groundwater at the A/M Area Southern Sector. A series of vertical recirculation wells are in place to treat trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene contamination in this portion of the A/M groundwater contamination plume. Laboratory scale research performed by Savannah River National Laboratory has determined that the addition of humate system should result in the enhanced attenuation of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene present at Southern Sector. South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control has reviewed the bench scale study results and issued a technical assistance. Under the technical assistance, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions is allowed to perform an extended field scale humate injection and monitoring campaign to evaluate the use of this innovative approach for treatment of volatile organic compounds (e.g., trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene) in Southern Sector groundwater.
