Savannah River National Laboratory will conduct fundamental studies into the solution chemistry of novel actinide complexes and nano-clusters. These studies will focus on the stability, reactivity, and electrochemistry of novel actinide compounds in aqueous and non-aqueous solutions. Spectroscopic, electrochemical and other techniques will be used to determine solution phase species. The collective body of work will determine if the chemical and electrochemical properties of the novel actinide materials can be exploited to affect chemical separations from other species. Possible outcomes of this research would be the identification of novel actinide complexes and nano-clusters with tailored properties ideal for applications in nuclear energy.
