The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) proposes to provide financial assistance to the University of Kentucky Research Foundation and sub-awardee University of Dallas for scientific research related to Elastic and Inelastic Neutron Scattering Cross Section Measurements on Iron, Silicon, and Carbon. The work scope involves the measurement of neutron scattering cross sections from enriched 56Fe and natural, but pure 28Si. Secondary measurements will be performed on 12C. Development work will occur on 2H and 7Li. Angular distributions, (differential cross sections), of the scattered neutrons, will be measured for 5 to 10 incident neutron energies per year. Gamma-ray production cross sections arising from inelastic neutron scattering will also be measured. The work of the first 18 months concentrates on 56Fe, and the final 18 months on 28Si. Carbon differential cross sections will be measured throughout the performance period.
