The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide federal funding to Home Innovation Research Labs (HIRL) to develop and validate high performance building envelope solutions for low load homes.
The proposed activities would include engineering research, structural testing of test walls and performance monitoring of the exterior walls of selected homes using internet-based data acquisition. Engineering research would be conducted from HIRL’s office in Upper Marlboro, MD while structural testing would be completed at their dedicated lab facility also in Upper Marlboro, MD. The performance monitoring of exterior walls would be conducted in a variety of locations in different climate zones within the continental U.S. and would involve monitoring moisture levels in residential structures provided by builder participants. Specific locations have not been chosen at this time; however, the study would be observational and would not require any construction, installation or ground disturbing activities. In-lab structural testing would involve moving large test walls using company-owned equipment. Worker safety and training procedures are in place for workers / employees in the lab.
