United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) would utilize DOE and cost share funding to develop a centrifugal compressor that uses a low Global Warming Potential, efficient, and nonflammable refrigerant. UTRC would demonstrate prototypes on a calorimeter in a laboratory setting, advancing the compressor TRL from 2 to 5.

Design and analysis work would occur in Budget Period 1 with compressor assembly and testing planned for Budget Period 2. Project activities are defined but the exact UTRC laboratory location for the prototype testing has not yet been determined. UTRC has several laboratories that have heat and cooling sources available which would be considered for testing the prototypes. Regardless of the exact laboratory location, all of the proposed activities would occur within existing facilities designed for that type of laboratory testing. Minor changes to the chosen facility may be required to add refrigerant safety sensors, and run new low-voltage wires for controls and instrumentation. Any laboratory facility chosen would have active safety plans, systems, and processes in place with hazardous waste removal procedures that comply with government standards and testing activities would comply with applicable laboratory safety and environmental standards. All project activities would be consistent with existing permits.
