A large portion of the Western Sector contaminant plume is outside the influence of the existing M-Area groundwater recovery well system. The corrective action program associated with the M-Area and Metallurgical Laboratory Hazardous Waste Management Facilities is divided into five individual sectors that are based on geography, subsurface conditions, and ongoing actions. Western Sector is one of these five corrective action sectors. This Western Sector characterization effort entails advancing 12 soil borings, three of which are contingent soil borings, and installing 20 groundwater monitoring wells to determine the nature and extent of the solvent contamination and to define the geology and hydrology of the area so that informed decisions can be made regarding corrective action measures.
