Dr. Wendin D. Smith currently serves as the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Associate Administrator and Deputy Under Secretary for Counterterrorism and Counterproliferation.  In this position, Dr. Smith is responsible for overseeing and advancing programs that counter nuclear terrorism and nuclear proliferation.  Dr. Smith's organization also manages capabilities to prepare for and respond to nuclear and radiological accidents and incidents worldwide.

Dr. Smith recently served as Director of Security Policy at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.  In this capacity, she coordinated the division’s work related to multilateral organizations, NATO affairs and security policy, as well as arms control, disarmament, and nonproliferation.  Previously, she was Managing Director with Deloitte Consulting, LLC. In prior roles with the Department of Defense, she served as the Senior Advisor to the U.S. Special Operations Command for Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD), and as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for CWMD.

Previously, Dr. Smith supported public and private sector clients, including the U.S. Departments of Defense and Energy, in designing and executing cooperative threat reduction, nonproliferation, and public diplomacy programs in the former Soviet Union.  In addition, she supported private sector clients in the nexus between nuclear energy and nonproliferation, providing services related to compliance with international treaties and norms, regulatory reviews, and export/import requirements.  Dr. Smith has also supported public and private sector clients in biological threat reduction and biosafety & biosecurity programs. Dr. Smith is fluent in Russian, conversational in German, and a Member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
