This environmental assessment addresses the Proposed Action by the Department of Energy to construct and operate National Synchrotron Light Source-II at Brookhaven National Laboratory, an advanced synchrotron light source designed to study the properties and functions of materials with nanoscale resolution.
The proposed action addressed in this EA is the withdrawal of approximately 308,600 acres of public land administered by the the Bureau of Land Management from surface entry and new mining claims, subject to valid existing rights, within and surrounding the Caliente rail corridor, as described in the Final Environmental Impact Statement for a Geologic Repository for the Disposal of Spent Nuclear Fuel and High-Level Radioactive Waste at Yucca Mountain, Nye County, Nevada (DOE 2002).
This Environmental Assessment (EA) describes a proposal by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to demolish the Bevatron and the structure housing it, Building 51, at Berkeley Lab. During its operation from 1954 until 1993, the Bevatron was among the world’s leading particle accelerators, and during the 1950s and 1960s, four Nobel Prizes were awarded for work conducted in whole or in part there.
The Department of Energy (DOE) proposes to disposition part of its excess uranium inventory using one or a combination of two methods: (1) enrichment to either natural uranium (NU) or low-enriched uranium (LEU) product, and subsequent storage or sale of the resultant NU or LEU product (the Enrichment Alternative), and (2) direct sale2 to appropriately licensed entities (the Direct Sale Alternative).
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE or the Department) proposes the disposition (that is, sale, transfer, grant, or disposal) of approximately 15,300 tons (13,800 metric tons) of nickel metal scrap DOE has recovered from equipment it used in the uranium enrichment processes at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP), in Paducah, Kentucky, and the East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where DOE currently stores the nickel.
The Burleigh County Wind Energy Center is a wind generation project proposed by FPL Energy Burleigh County Wind, LLC (Burleigh County Wind). The proposed project would produce up to 50 megawatts (MW) of electricity, averaged annually. The proposed project is located in Burleigh County, North Dakota, approximately 3 miles south and 2 miles east of the town of Wilton, North Dakota.
Based on the information and analysis in the EA, LM has determined that its Preferred Action (Alternative 2) will not constitute a major federal action that would significantly affect the quality of the human environment within the meaning of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
This environmental assessment (EA) evaluates the impacts of planned activities to modify selected Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) facilities; process the ORNL inventory of uranium-233 (U-233); and transport the processed material to a long-term disposal facility. Based on the results of the analyses reported in the Final EA, DOE has determined that the proposed action is not a major federal action that would significantly affect the quality of the human environment within the context of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969.
