April 29, 2026This Fourth Amended Determination follows the approval of additional funding, extended period of performance, change of project performers, and additional project milestones to support the project team's small-scale research and development activities to continue testing and improving their hydrokinetic turbine power generator. Specifically, the project team will (1) design, test, and validate a pre-commercial turbine system capable of operation under winter river ice conditions, both in lab and deployed in the Nenana River, (2) develop and establish remote monitoring capabilities of the hydrokinetic system, (3) design a larger shore-based deployment system to enable scalable operation in most river systems, (4) identify component materials to simplify future modular fabrication of hydrokinetic systems, and (5) identify locations in AK for future deployment sites. If successful, the project will enable a proven system for low-cost river-driven energy production, reducing dependence on foreign energy sources, and thereby increasing U.S. energy security.
