April 22, 2026Funding will support the project team's small-scale research and development of a sensorless, bearingless electric motor and drive system capable of high-speed operation in compressor applications for industrial and commercial use. Specifically, the project team will (1) fabricate, test, and validate an initial prototype motor to meet performance metrics, (2) refine and fabricate final prototype motor, test and validate to meet performance and safety metrics, and (3) conduct a techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment for next phase development. If successful, this project will result in a next-generation efficient and reliable motor system for use in applications such as compressors, pumps, and industrial automation, ultimately reducing dependence on foreign energy, thereby increasing U.S. energy security.
