Funding will support the project team's small-scale research and development of a complete after-treatment package system for existing lean- and ultra-lean burn natural gas engines used for power generation, aiming to significantly increase methane conversion efficiency by over 99 percent. Specifically, the project team will (1) conduct additional testing and modeling of methane oxidation catalysts (MOC), (2) incorporate MOCs into engine designs for initial testing and performance verification, (3) based on test results, conduct and monitor field test of a full-scale system to meet reliability, durability, and emission standards, and (4) identify needed adjustments for future iterations of the system. If successful, this project will result in an efficient MOC system to lower emissions from natural gas combustion, ultimately improving energy efficiency and reducing dependence on foreign energy, thereby increasing U.S. energy security.
