Funding will support the project team's small-scale research and development of a low-loss grain-oriented steel technology to improve the efficiency of transformers used in the electric grid. Specifically, the project team will (1) identify, fabricate, and select a subset of alloys for further evaluation, (2) evaluate subset alloys using predetermined properties and metrics, (3) select at least two alloys for further testing and evaluation, (4) identify, test, and evaluate final alloy composition for use in prototype transformer, and (5) develop, fabricate, test, and validate performance of prototype transformer to meet performance metrics.
