August 1, 2025Funding will support the project team's small-scale research and development to integrate and enhance the transmission and distribution capacity of existing alternating current (AC) lines by blending with the high voltage direct current (DC) energy networks. Specifically, the project team will (1) develop models and simulations to evaluate the proposed systems, (2) develop a small prototype for initial system evaluation, (3) develop additional system components, and (4) combine components, test, and validate the full system to meet final concept standards. If successful, this project will result in increased capacity to transmit AC and DC electricity using existing infrastructure, provide cost savings through reduced needs to construct new infrastructure, meeting the growing needs of rising domestic energy use and thereby increasing U.S. energy security.
