The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide funding to US Hybrid for a demonstration project that would design, manufacture, and test prototype fuel cell range extended electric utility vans. The proposed activities include design, fabrication, and vehicle testing followed by vehicle deployment to demonstrate proof of concept.
US Hybrid would be the fuel cell engine system supplier and vehicle integrator from its facilities in Torrance, CA; South Windsor, CT; and Worcester, MA. Nissan North America would provide the electric utility vans and limited prototype testing as well as integration support from their Sacramento, CA location. The first phase involves modification of one Nissan e-NV200 utility van to operate with a hydrogen fuel cell system and to demonstrate its performance and reliability. Based on the success of the single prototype, the second phase would involve construction and testing of a fleet of 20 vehicles operated (for 5,000 hours or 30 months per vehicle) in and around the northeastern U.S. by National Grid out of their Brooklyn, NY location. This would be followed an economic assessment, a payback analysis, and other relevant analyses. Argonne National Laboratory located in Lemont, IL would provide detailed modeling and analysis capabilities.
