The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide federal funding to the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Tribal Utilities Commission to establish a solar photovoltaic (PV) industry on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in South Dakota through a partnership with GRID Alternatives. This partnership would endeavor to install ten solar PV, clean-energy systems on homes in the Wicozani Subdivision. Additionally, these ten installations would also provide hands-on, solar-installation training to at least 15 Tribal trainees from the Housing Authority, Sinte Gleska University and interested community members.
Activities associated with the proposed project would include designing, procuring, and installing 5.8kW solar PV arrays; and developing and offering warranty, operations and maintenance, and monitoring training classes. Installations would be undertaken on every south-facing slope of the rooftops of 10 previously existing homes within the Ring Thunder Community. Slight modifications (installation of conduit and wiring) to the electrical systems of these homes would be made in order to facilitate tie-in to the grid.
