Funding will support the project's small-scale research and development of bulk ionic glasses (BIG) that capture the ductility of lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) but can be processed with traditional glass processing for applications such as cell phone screens or electrolytes for fast-charging high-energy batteries. Specifically, the project team will (1) synthesize initial prototype BIG samples; (2) test samples and identify three compositions that meet validation criteria; (3) synthesize down-selected BIG to identify the most viable product; (4) fabricate full cell batteries using BIG; and (5) test, analyze, and validate BIG and fast-charging battery system for future scaled applications.
