Funding will support the project team's small-scale research and development of Active, Virtual And resistive Transformers for Transmission and Distribution systems, And Resources (AVATAR) to transform the power grid from reactive to resistive, subsequently enhancing grid stability. Specifically, the project team will (1) research and develop topologies and control algorithms to implement AVATAR; (2) construct a 60 hertz AVATAR transformer prototype for testing and validation; (3) based on prototype test results, construct, test, and validate a 1 megawatt transformer for functionality and effectiveness on improving grid performance.
