NASA and the US Department of Energy are evaluating Nuclear Thermal Propulsion for advanced space exploration missions. Ongoing tasks include: reactor core studies, architectural and feasibility studies for engine sizing, fuel element manufacturing studies and demonstrations, assessment of fuels and regulatory issues associated with low-enriched uranium, technology infusion studies, a ground test demonstration, cost and schedule estimation, vehicle studies, and ground test planning support by NASA Stennis Space Center.
