This study will investigate potential improvements to the formulation of saltstone to increase its ability to retain technetium under oxidizing conditions. The initial step of this improvement is to synthesize a layered double hydroxide [Mg6Al2(OH)16(NO3)x] via a precipitation reaction at room temperature under a nitrogen atmosphere.  Magnesium may be replaced with either Calcium, Copper, or Zinc.
