DOE is responsible for the safe storage of Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) in its possession as well as obtaining data to verify the condition of SNF currently being stored in large storage casks at the INL Site. To meet this responsibility, DOE needs to open and examine the low-burnup SNF currently in long-term dry storage to verify the condition of the fuel and look for any degradation.
