The purpose of this R&D laboratory activity is to understand humate sorption on SRS subsurface soils to facilitate use of humate solutions as an injectable amendment for enhancing attenuation of metals and radionuclides in contaminated groundwater. The study is required to optimize humate concentrations, volumes of injections, and spacing of injectors in a remediation system. Humate is a generic name for dissolved humic substances -- the residuum of the natural degradation of plant materials. It consists of a mixture of high molecular weight organic molecules that have an affinity for many metals and radionuclides.
