$15 Million for Transitioning Tribal Colleges and Universities to Clean Energy

Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Indian Energy Policy and Programs (Office of Indian Energy) issued a Notice of Intent (NOI) to release a $15 million Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) this spring to install clean energy technology at Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs). Awards from this planned FOA are anticipated to range from $100,000 to $250,000 for planning grants or from $1 million to $3 million for deployment grants.

“Tribal Colleges and Universities are vital to Native communities and the generations to come,” said Wahleah Johns, Director of the Office of Indian Energy. “This $15 million in funding is a down payment in our future, by investing in these essential institutions we can pave the way to a safer, healthier, and cleaner tomorrow.”

Through this planned FOA, the DOE Office of Indian Energy intends to solicit applications from TCUs for:

  1. Clean energy project planning
  2. Clean energy technology deployment.

The FOA will build on efforts by the Office of Indian Energy to maximize the development and deployment of energy solutions for the benefit of American Indians and Alaska Natives. Between 2010 and 2022, the DOE’s Office of Indian Energy has invested over $120 million in more than 210 tribal energy projects across the contiguous 48 states and Alaska. These projects, valued at more than $215 million, are leveraged by over $93 million in recipient cost share. Please see the DOE Office of Indian Energy’s Tribal Energy Projects Database for a map and summaries of these competitively funded projects.
