Electricity Transmission Scheduling at the Bonneville Power Administration
The Department of Energy's four power marketing administrations are responsible for marketing, selling and transmitting power produced largely at various Federal dams. Bonneville Power Administration (Bonneville), the largest of the power marketing administrations, is responsible for a territory of 300,000 square miles including Oregon, Washington, Idaho, western Montana, and small portions of several adjoining states. Bonneville's transmission system-which includes over 15,000 miles of transmission lines-accounts for about three-quarters of the high-voltage gride in the Pacific Northwest. Bonneville's system also includes major links with other regions, and other utility customers transmite power across Bonneville's transmission lines.
Audit of the Safeguards and Security Program at the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site
On June 26, 2003, a protective force performance test was conducted at the Department of Energy's Y-12 National Security Complex, which is a component of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). The purpose of the test was to obtain realistic data for developing the Y-12 Site Safeguards and Security Plan. The mission at the site includes a number of sensitive activities, such as enriched uranium material warehousing, and weapon dismantlement and storage. These activities necessitate that the site have a protective force capable of responding to potential security incidents such as terrorist attack.
The Department of Energy's national laboratories have diverse missions that range from national defense to fundamental research in the physical sciences. Work at the laboratories is often carried out in collaborations with scientists and researchers from non-Department facilities in foreign countries, frequently through the use of Cooperative Research and Development Agreements and Work-for-Others projects.
