Let’s find out how to navigate the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Next-Generation Geothermal Field Tests and Geothermal Resource Characterization and Confirmation NOFO with this Quick Guide! 

This Office of Geothermal (OG) NOFO will provide up to $171.5 million to support next-generation geothermal field tests, as well as next-generation and hydrothermal resource characterization/confirmation drilling, to help expand geothermal energy production.

  1. Determine if the opportunity is a good fit for you. If you’re ready to help advance next-generation geothermal and hydrothermal development, chances are the answer is yes! 
    • Sections III.A–III.F of the NOFO provide details that can help you understand the purpose and strategic goals of this funding, as well as the Topic Areas.
    • Sections I.A.1 and II.C provide information on the funding available and the cost share you need to provide in order to participate.
       
  2. Make sure you’re eligible by reviewing the eligibility requirements in Section II of the NOFO. 
     
  3. Review Section IV.B to prepare your Letter of Intent (not required) and submit by the deadline demonstration project idea aligns with what is being funded
     
  4. Write your application! Make sure your application is compliant by reading Sections IV.C, VI.B, and VI.C.1. Then, consider the Technical Review Criteria and Other Selection Factors in Sections VI.C.2 and VI.D in developing your application materials
     
  5. Edit and review your application to ensure you have covered everything that’s needed and that you meet the requirements and timelines in the Submission Requirements and Deadlines information in Section V

  7. Submit your Letter of Intent in Exchange by 5:00 p.m. ET on March 27, 2026 and your full application by 5:00 p.m. ET on April 30, 2026, using the instructions in the Application and Submission Information in Section V.
