Acting General Counsel and Principal Deputy General Counsel

Novak was appointed Principal Deputy General Counsel in May 2025 and has since served as Acting General Counsel. He is an Honors College graduate of Ball State University and a graduate of the Indiana University School of Law.
During law school, Novak worked as a law clerk for Bill Cummings, formerly the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. After graduating law school, he served a two-year clerkship with the late Charles R. Richey, United States District Judge for the District of Columbia, before joining McGuire Woods, where he was elected to partnership. Before joining the Department, he worked in a variety of roles at technology companies over the course of more than 20 years, including managing litigation, compliance, patent, and public policy functions, while also serving on the boards of the Northern Virginia Technology Council, the Internet Association, and the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation.
