The Transport and Storage program focuses on expediting the build-out of transport and storage infrastructure for purposes of enhanced oil and gas recovery, including regional geologic basin efforts and research on materials and field laboratory testing.
The program prioritizes early-stage research in technology areas that both support energy security and for which there is a clear and unique Federal role. Concentration areas include leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to enhance efficiency and quality of subsurface investigations, fast-tracking validation of novel technologies for energy activities in the subsurface, basin-scale studies with cross-cutting applications, and demonstrating approaches for advanced operational control and decision support.
The Transport and Storage program will play an important role in advancing next generation, cutting-edge technologies intended to lower the cost of transport and storage facility development, improve operational performance, and help derisk existing and future projects.
Programs and Initiatives
CARBON STORAGE ASSURANCE FACILITY ENTERPRISE (CARBONSAFE)
The Carbon Storage Assurance Facility Enterprise (CarbonSAFE) Initiative began in 2016 to facilitate development of commercial-scale storage facilities, each with the capacity to store more than 50 million metric tons of CO2. The CarbonSAFE Initiative has been carried out in a phased approach representing the different stages in the development of a geologic storage project, from conception to construction.
CARBON DIOXIDE TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE FINANCE AND INNOVATION PROGRAM
Under the Carbon Dioxide Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (CIFIA) Program, the Loan Programs Office, in partnership with FE, offers access to capital for large-capacity, common-carrier CO2 transport projects (e.g., pipelines, rail, shipping, and other transport methods).
MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN USGS AND FE
The United States Geologic Survey (USGS) and FE signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish an arrangement for cooperation regarding basin-scale geologic CO2 storage resource management.
