The sandstone outcrops at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) in the hills near Simi Valley provide the perfect habitat for two of the 50 species of dudleya native to California: the chalk dudleya (Dudleya pulverulenta) and the lanceleaf dudleya (Dudleya lanceolata). While only two species of dudleya are currently found at SSFL, the site’s environment has potential to become home to the rare stemmed dudleya (Dudleya multicaulis) and a subspecies known as canyon liveforever (Dudleya cymose ssp).
