 
                          
                    
      Jack Zimmerman became the Acting Associate Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary (APDAS) for the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (EM) in October 2025. He is dual-hatted while continuing to serve as the the Director of the Environmental Management Consolidated Business Center (EMCBC). As the APDAS he provides technical policy support in the planning and field execution of EM wastes and materials disposition, soil and groundwater remediation, and deactivation and decommissioning of EM facilities. He also provides leadership on matters related to regulatory affairs defined by law or negotiated or stipulated in compliance agreements.
As the Director of the EMCBC he leads all EM pre-award acquisition as well as critical field operations at 11 sites across the country including collaboration with the Naval Reactors.
During his 30 years of federal service, he has held various key roles within DOE, including Manager of the Idaho Cleanup Project, Federal Project Director for the Depleted Uranium Hexafluoride Federal Project, and Associate Director of the Mound Closure Project. He has worked in nuclear facility construction, operations, and environmental remediation. He served as the Department's cochair of the Safety Culture Improvement Panel and had a role in establishing critical supply chain improvement initiatives with the Energy Facilities Contractor Group.
He holds a master's degree in radiological engineering and bachelor's in nuclear engineering, both from the University of Cincinnati. He is a licensed professional engineer.
