PENDELTON, Ore. — As part of public outreach to communities in its transportation corridors, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) recently held a road show for upcoming shipments of transuranic radioactive waste from the Hanford Site in Washington state to the WIPP underground repository in New Mexico. WIPP subject-matter experts and drivers hit the road to meet members of the public, show them a shipping package up close and provide information about transportation protocols, shipping procedures and other topics. One stop was the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) in northeastern Oregon. Tribal leaders, community members and state and local officials participated in a public meeting in the CTUIR Governance Center.
