Exports of primary energy have increased every year since 2002, starting at 3.6 quadrillion Btu (quads) and rising to 27.5 quads in 2022. Primary energy includes coal, coal coke, crude oil, petroleum products, natural gas, biofuels, and electricity. While primary energy exports have been rising, primary imports have been declining from a peak of 34.7 quads in 2007 to 21.5 quads in 2022. The result of increasing exports and decreasing imports of primary energy led to positive net exports beginning in 2019 and that trend has continued, reaching 6 quads in 2022.
