The taxes assessed per gallon of gasoline and diesel fuel in the United States are significantly lower than in other developed countries. As of December 2021, U.S. motor fuel taxes, which include a weighted average of state plus federal taxes, were less than half that of the other countries shown on the figure below. In the most dramatic comparison, U.S. gasoline taxes were only 10% of those in the Netherlands.
