In 2017 the United States exported 3.17 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of natural gas and only imported 3.04 Tcf of natural gas, making net imports negative for the first time in 60 years. Total imports of natural gas fell from the peak of 4.61 Tcf in 2007 until 2015. Exports of natural gas began rising slightly in the 1990’s with greater increases in the early 2000’s. Exports of natural gas have tripled since 2009.
