EERE’s Building Technologies Office (BTO), Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO), and Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO) jointly released a FY23 Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF) Base Annual Appropriations National Laboratory Call with input from the Office of Technology Transitions (OTT). Five research topics – with four focused on challenges in the building sector – are collectively seeking reductions in operational and embodied energy and carbon from materials, buildings, and industrial processes found throughout the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. Projects funded under this lab call will strive to prepare the following lab-developed materials and energy systems/processes for commercial adoption.

  1. Greener buildings and building materials with reduced embodied carbon
  2. Advanced electronics, sensors, and controls for lower-energy buildings
  3. Thermal energy storage and waste heat recovery technologies
  4. Advanced heat pump component technologies
  5. National lab developed IP technology maturation and commercialization projects utilizing the Lab Embedded Entrepreneurship Program (LEEP)

These promising approaches, if successfully commercialized, can lead to the deployment of clean energy and decarbonization technologies critical for climate protection.

How to Apply

Eligibility

Only national laboratories are eligible for funding from this lab call, but funded projects must involve a domestic industry partner. TCF is looking to engage with a broad range of partners – from incubators and accelerators to manufacturers and trade associations – to join these pursuits toward commercialization. Partners can be any nonfederal entity, including private companies, state or local governments (or entities created by a state or local government), colleges, universities, tribal entities, or nonprofit organizations.

Teaming Partner List

To join the Teaming Partner List so labs can contact you, interested partners should email jointfy23tcf@ee.doe.gov with the subject line “FY23 IEDO/AMMTO/BTO Joint TCF Lab Call: Teaming Partner Information” and follow the structure set forth on page 18 of this lab call.

About the Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF)

The Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF) is part of a broad array of activities that the Department of Energy (DOE) and its national laboratories undertake to ensure federal research and development investments in technologies with commercial potential find their way to a viable market. This process better enables DOE national labs to prepare and mature these technologies for commercial adoption, identify the highest-quality prospective partners, and assist those industry partners in evaluating technologies for their business models.
