Dr. Reyhaneh Shenassa

Dr. Reyhaneh Shenassa serves as the Chief Engineer at the U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels and Feedstocks Office.

In this role, Reyhaneh is working on addressing key challenges to the integration and scale-up of bioenergy technologies. Specifically, she is responsible to develop and lead the execution of the office’s research and development strategy for identifying and reducing technology integration and scale-up barriers. 

For over 20 years, Reyhaneh worked with Valmet, a global developer and supplier of process technologies, automation and services for the pulp, paper and energy industries.  She served as the R&D manager in Valmet’s North American office. She was also the R&D project manager for Valmet-Fortum’s joint development project for production of transportation fuels from biomass.

Reyhaneh obtained her Bachelor of Applied Science in chemical engineering from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran, and her Master of Applied Science and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from University of Toronto, Canada.  She has been an adjunct professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto since 2014.  Reyhaneh holds a patent on Catalytic Upgrading of Pyrolytic Vapors.
