Upcoming Webinars

May 22: Live Webcast on Genetically Modified Algae

Webinar Sponsor:  Bioenergy Technologies Office

The Energy Department will present a live webcast titled “Genetically Modified Algae: A Risk-Benefit Assessment” today from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. During the webinar, Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Dr. Richard T. Sayre will present an overview of key challenges related to biocontainment systems and related regulatory policies. Dr. Sayre will also present examples of genetically modified algal traits engineered by Los Alamos National Laboratory to enhance photosynthesis and biomass productivity with respect to risk analysis.

May 27: Live Webinar on National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Fuel Cell Contaminant Database

Webinar Sponsor: Fuel Cell Technologies Office

The Energy Department will present a live webinar titled “NREL’s Fuel Cell Contaminant Database” on Tuesday, May 27, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has led a multi-year project studying the effect of system-derived contaminants on the performance and durability of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. The team screened approximately 60 commercially available balance-of-plant (BOP) materials using multiple methods to identify and quantify system-derived contaminants. In order to make the results of this work more accessible and useful to the fuel cell community, NREL has designed an interactive material screening database. The webinar will provide an overview of data obtained during the project and a tutorial on how to use the Web-based data tool to access project results.

MAY 28: Renewable Energy Project Refinement Webinar

Webinar Sponsors: EERE Tribal Energy Program, DOE Office of Indian Energy, and the Western Area Power Administration

The webinar sponsors will present the next Tribal Renewable Energy Series webinar on Wednesday, May 28, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Presenters will focus on the components of renewable energy project refinement:  project financing strategies, off-taker agreements, and vendor selection. Case studies from Chaninik Wind Group (Alaska), San Carlos Apache (Arizona), and Forest County Potawatomi (Wisconsin) will highlight financial resources and ownership options—including venture capital and innovative financing—that can help Tribes overcome barriers and attract private investment. Finally, attendees will learn how project refinement can accelerate renewable energy development and, with it, tribal economic and community development.

There is no charge to attend, but advance registration is required.

June 5: Live Webinar on Energy Efficient Expert Evaluations: A Customized Assessment Approach

Webinar Sponsor: EERE's Federal Energy Management Program

The Energy Department will present a live webinar titled "Energy Efficiency Expert Evaluations: A Customized Assessment Approach" on Thursday, June 5, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. This webinar will describe a step-by-step method to conduct an "energy efficiency expert evaluation"—a customized process to meet site-specific energy goals. This approach combines the most effective features of an energy audit and retro-commissioning, while avoiding the limitations of each. Webinar participants will also learn about a multi-disciplinary process to streamline site visit planning and on-site discovery, recommend corrective measures, establish a master list of findings, and complete the project handoff.

April 17: Live Webinar on Fuel Cells at NASCAR

Webinar Sponsor: Fuel Cell Technologies Office

The Energy Department presented live webinar titled “Fuel Cells at NASCAR” on Thursday, April 17. Presented by NASCAR and Acumentrics, this webinar focused on the use of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) generators for powering broadcast cameras for NASCAR. Recently, Acumentrics Corporation completed a field test program with NASCAR to replace small portable gasoline generators with SOFC units that use commercial propane. These generators demonstrated considerable fuel savings and emission reductions compared with the standard solution, while providing reduced noise and vibration. With these attributes, the units have proven to be a viable power alternative for broadcasting needs for a host of different applications. During the webinar, presenters compared this latest-generation power solution with conventional generators and explore lessons learned and potential paths forward.
