DOE Announces Fourth Cohort of Cyclotron Road Entrepreneurial Technology Fellows

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced the fourth cohort of fellows selected to join Cyclotron Road, an entrepreneurial research and development program based at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Out of 175 applicants, the 13 selected PhD-level scientists and engineers will serve as entrepreneurial technology fellows with aspirations of taking their unique ideas from the lab onto the commercialization pathway. Fellows will spend the next two years embedded at Berkeley Lab with access to sophisticated, rare, or one-of-a-kind laboratory equipment and opportunities to collaborate with leading scientists in their respective fields of study.

AMO’s RAPID Manufacturing Institute Releases First Annual Report

AMO’s Rapid Advancement in Process Intensification Deployment (RAPID) Institute released its first annual report, “Working Together to Grow Stronger,” to recap its inaugural year of operation.

Within the past year, RAPID Institute:

  • Welcomed 56 members from industry, academia, government labs, and other nonprofits;
  • Developed roadmaps for six critical technical focus areas and workforce development;
  • Jumpstarted four projects in 2017; and
  • Identified an additional 21 projects to begin in 2018.

Two project calls are currently underway that focus on Applied Technology R&D and/or Education and Workforce Development. These calls are open only to RAPID members and close on May 22, 2018. To read more about RAPID’s first year achievements, view the annual report here.

AMO’s Allen Hefner a Finalist for “Oscars” of Public Service

AMO is pleased to announce that Allen Hefner, technology manager on detail to DOE from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, was named a finalist for the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals awards, commonly known as the Sammies.

Dr. Hefner was nominated in the "Career Achievement" category for developing the underpinnings of power semiconductor device application that helped manufacturers vastly improve the efficiency of consumer electronics and industrial equipment, leading to trillions of dollars in energy savings worldwide.
