January 24, 2024The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced awards to five of its Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institutes to fund the acceleration of education and workforce development (EWD) programs that support domestic manufacturing. Specifically, this funding will be used to expand EWD services to broader communities across our nation and meet the future labor needs of industries that are projected to rapidly expand in the immediate future as America continues its shift to a clean energy economy. Education and workforce development are fundamental to building the robust domestic clean energy manufacturing sector needed to achieve the Biden-Harris Administration’s climate goals.
“American manufacturing has always been, and will always be, powered by people,” said Dr. Christopher Saldaña, Director of DOE’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO). “By devoting ample resources to ensure that our manufacturing workforce is equipped with the skills and expertise needed to guide our country to a renewable future, we are not just investing in the success of future domestic industry but in the success of the American worker.”
The five Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institutes that have been awarded this funding are the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII), the Cybersecurity Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CyManII), the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI), PowerAmerica Institute, and the REMADE Institute. These organizations are well positioned to create innovative workforce development programs that support the growth of the manufacturing ecosystem related to their technology areas.

DOE’s Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institutes are managed by AMMTO, within the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Each of these five manufacturing institutes are members of the Manufacturing USA network, an intergovernmental network of 17 public-private partner organizations that are working to secure the future of U.S. manufacturing through innovation, education, and collaboration.
