Envisioning a future for EM sites can be challenging for communities given the longevity of cleanup activities. However, when two sites have an almost identical footprint — in this case Portsmouth in Ohio and Paducah in Kentucky — the opportunity to see potential becomes clearer.

A community reuse organization created to address challenges and job loss stemming from the end of the Cold War hosted its annual meeting recently to celebrate 30 years of success serving five counties around Savannah River Site (SRS).

A team arranged for the reuse or disposal of nearly $11 million in government assets at the Savannah River Site (SRS) in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30.

EM transferred more than 180,000 pounds of reusable and recyclable materials recovered during the demolition process for 16 unused, outdated facilities at the Paducah Site over the past year to a local community reuse organization.

Jeff Avery, EM’s principal deputy assistant secretary, participated in a meet-and-greet last week in Washington, D.C., with two community partners involved in EM’s cleanup mission at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina.

DOE’s Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management (OREM) has completed the goals laid out for the site in EM’s 2022 priorities.

With supply chain issues creating difficulties in obtaining critical infrastructure components, the transfer of various pieces of electrical equipment from EM to the City of Oak Ridge comes at an opportune time.
