The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced the appointment of Andrew McClure as Director of the Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER). In this role, he is responsible for hardening critical infrastructure, enhancing preparedness and response capabilities, and fostering partnerships across federal, state, local, and private-sector stakeholders to protect America’s energy systems against evolving cyber and physical threats. McClure is committed to supporting President Donald J. Trump and U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright’s bold and ambitious mission to safeguard the nation’s energy infrastructure and restore America’s energy dominance.
“Andrew’s background in national security, cybersecurity, and emerging technology makes him exceptionally qualified to lead CESER,” said James P. Danly, Deputy Secretary of Energy. “As threats to our energy systems continue to evolve, his experience will strengthen our efforts to harden critical infrastructure, enhance preparedness, emergency response, and deepen partnerships across industry and government to deliver affordable, reliable, and secure energy to American families and industries.”
McClure’s experience across the public and private sectors positions him to lead CESER’s mission. Before returning to public service, McClure spent more than a decade as a venture capitalist investing in innovative technology companies critical to national security and economic competitiveness. At Forgepoint Capital he focused on cybersecurity and infrastructure software, partnering with entrepreneurs to build companies developing technologies that protect enterprises from evolving cyber threats. McClure also has more than 30 years of cumulative board director experience. He incubated several companies while at Forgepoint and is a Founding Investor at Surefire Cyber, Converge Insurance, and CyberCube.
Earlier in his career, McClure served as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Marine Corps where he led cross-functional teams specializing in signal intelligence and cyber operations in Afghanistan, the Middle East, East Africa, and Australia. He remains active in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.
McClure holds a Master of Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, a Master of Business Administration from the MIT Sloan School of Management, a Master of Strategic Studies from the Australian National University, and a Bachelor of Science in Astrophysics from the U.S. Naval Academy.
As part of this announcement, Emily Burdick will continue serving as Principal Deputy Director in CESER. Burdick has been an instrumental leader within CESER, stepping up to serve as Acting Director, and she will continue advancing CESER's mission to strengthen the security and resilience of the energy sector alongside McClure.
