AIKEN, S.C. (May 21, 2019) – The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce recognized Savannah River Site Contractors Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS), Savannah River Remediation (SRR), and Centerra-SRS for safety performance excellence due to their commitment to on-the-job safety. The companies were honored for achieving a commendable lost-day injury rate for 2018, which remained well below the national average.

“Three SRS contractors being recognized for excellence in safety performance exemplifies the strength of the safety culture that has been built and sustained at SRS for nearly 70 years, said Rick Sprague, SRNS Senior Vice President, Environmental Stewardship, Safety, Security, Health and Quality. “SRNS employees take pride in a job well done, which starts with safety and security at the heart of all that we do. That commitment is evident in our safety performance record; achieving 23 million safe hours requires a personal investment in safety from every SRNS employee, every day. I congratulate our team for that level of dedication and compassion for their teammates.”

SRNS employees are responsible for the environmental stewardship of the 310-square mile site, providing the nation’s supply of Tritium, securing and operating large chemical manufacturing plants and transforming nuclear materials into assets and stable waste forms. Additionally, they are responsible for landlord services across the site, including some of the nation’s most unique nuclear facilities.

SRR, the liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site, reached 11 million hours without a lostworkday case. That milestone was reached between August 2016 and December 2018.

SRR employees are responsible for dispositioning the 35 million gallons of Cold War-era radioactive liquid waste stored in the site’s 43 operational waste tanks. SRR stabilizes the liquid waste into safer, solid forms—either a glass-waste form or concrete-like form—to help protect site workers, the community, and the environment.

Patricia Allen, Savannah River Remediation ESH Director said, “At Savannah River Remediation, we consider safety more than a priority–in our company, it’s a value. Safety is not something that changes during our operations; it’s the underlining value that drives our mission each day. SRR is honored to be commended by the S.C. Chamber for this award that reflects our commitment to safe performance.”

Centerra-SRS manages the security of the Savannah River Site. “The safety and well-being of all employees is our top priority in all activities,” said Mark Bolton, Centerra-SRS General Manager. “They are our most important resource and I thank the entire team for their attention to detail and constant focus on safe operations.”

In 2018, Centerra-SRS employees again worked more than 1.4 million hours without a lost workday injury, with a total recordable case rate that was less than half the average for security contractors at other sites.
