PHENIX, the Pioneering High Energy Nuclear Interaction Experiment, is an exploratory experiment for the investigation of high energy collisions of heavy ions and protons; it is the largest of four experiments to take data at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The purpose of this action is to test the sPHENIX/ePHENIX detector upgrades; both of these are upgrades to the PHENIX.
