The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide federal funding to ABB, Inc. to develop a novel and compact direct-drive electric generator and its system aspects that would enable elimination of hydraulic components in the Power Take-Off of a Marine and Hydrokinetic system with an oscillating wave surge converter. DOE funding would be used for two phases to design, manufacture and test two alternative one kilowatt, 300 revolution-per-minute proof-of-concept machines, a larger 10 kilowatt, 30 revolution-per-minute prototype and eventually, a full-scale, direct-drive electrical generator for integration with a wave energy converter.
