Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Nuclear Fuel Cycle
Dr. Josh Jarrell serves as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Nuclear Fuel Cycle in the Office of Nuclear Energy. In this role, he directs the Department’s activities on nuclear fuel cycle technologies, including securing nuclear fuel supply, advancing fuel fabrication and development, and deploying new recycling technologies to improve resource utilization, reduce waste, and support the nuclear industry.
Before joining the Office of Nuclear Energy, Dr. Jarrell led Idaho National Laboratories’ (INL) Fuel Cycle Science and Technology division, which focuses on delivering nuclear fuel cycle solutions, including innovative aqueous and pyrochemical separations technologies, nuclear material and isotope recovery and availability, waste and used fuel management, and the development of cutting-edge test bed environments. Previously, Dr. Jarrell led both INL’s Pyrochemistry and Molten Salt System Department as well as their Used Fuel Management department. Prior to joining, Dr. Jarrell spent seven years at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a R&D staff member with a focus on modeling and simulation of nuclear reactors as well as spent fuel management.
Dr. Jarrell holds a bachelor’s and a doctorate in nuclear engineering from Texas A&M University.
