Best Practices in Photovoltaic System Asset Management: From Design to Decommissioning

This training will help agencies achieve affordable and effective operation and maintenance (O&M) of photovoltaic (PV) energy systems. The objective is to provide informational resources such as cost models and template specifications to reduce the cost of delivering O&M and increase the performance of fielded systems. 

The training will also address design decisions that affect required O&M, approaches to financing and contracting for O&M, and alternatives to consider at the end of a PV system's expected performance period and decommissioning.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Identify performance data regarding performance of fielded PV systems.
  • Recognize how design decisions can affect O&M requirements and system performance and disposal/recycling.
  • Identify how to complete a plan and estimate the cost of delivered administration, preventative and corrective maintenance, and de-commissioning.
  • Recognize structures for contracting and sample specifications.

Instructors

  • Jal provides techno-economic analysis in the Strategies & Implementation Group in the Integrated Application Center. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in December 2016 and joined NREL in January 2017. Jal's research Interests include renewable energy deployment and technologies, energy policies, assessment and modeling. Jal earned an M.S. in energy science technology and policy at Carnegie Mellon University and a B.S. in electrical engineering, Nirma University, Ahmedabad, India. Jal is specializing in topical research into PV O&M issues.

  • Andy has 40 years of experience with photovoltaics including 30 years as an engineer at NREL. Andy has been interested in PV system performance and O&M since 2016 and has authored several reports and papers on the topic. Andy has a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D in mechanical engineering and is a registered professional engineer.
