The main components of ResStock include 1) a residential building stock characteristics database that characterizes the U.S. residential building stock, 2) an automated workflow that creates OpenStudio® and EnergyPlus models -- DOE BTO flagship physics-based building energy modeling software, and 3) the use of high-performance and cloud computing to simulate the models, publish the datasets, and query the results.
Lead Performer: National Renewable Energy Laboratory – Golden, CO
DOE Total Funding: $500,000
Project Term: October 1, 2022 – December 31, 2024
Funding Type: AOP Project (Direct-Funded Lab Project)
Project Objective
ResStockTM is a best-in-class building stock energy model for simulating energy use in the residential sector of the U.S. This model, and results from the model, are leveraged by multiple DOE and external stakeholders for understanding economic, and environmental impacts of changes in energy-efficient technology on residential energy consumption. This model is foundational for a range of activities, such as the publication of the End-Use Savings Shapes dataset, the Clean Energy to Communities initiative, Communities-LEAP, grid capabilities, and the Upgrade America Challenge. This project provides the necessary, foundational software development and management support to keep ResStock operational and cybersecure for its wide range of stakeholders. The 2024 tasks include validation of seasonal peak load ratios, analysis support for Housing and Urban Development decarbonization framework planning, and maintaining batch process software, technical documentation, alignment with OpenStudio-HPXML, security, and responding to stakeholder questions.
Project Impact
ResStock is used by DOE and external stakeholders to develop residential energy efficiency and decarbonization retrofit strategies, plans, and programs.
